एक बार एक भिक्षु की शंका का निवारण करते हुए महात्मा बुद्ध ने कहा- "एक व्यक्ति तुमसे राजगृह जाने का रास्ता पूछता है और तुम उसे ठीक-ठीक रास्ता बता देते हो, उसके बाद भी वह व्यक्ति गलत रास्ते पर चल दे अर्थात पूर्व दिशा में चलने के बजाए पश्चिम दिशा में चलने लगें तो वह राजगृह नहीं पहुँच सकता। लेकिन वहीं एक दूसरा व्यक्ति आता है और वह भी राजगृह का रास्ता पूछता है, उसे भी तुम सही दिशा में जाने वाले मार्ग को बताते हो तो वह तुम्हारे बताये मार्ग पर चल कर राजगृह पहुंच जाता है। इन दोनों परिणामों में तुम क्या करोगें? भिक्षु ने उत्तर दिया- "मैं कुछ नहीं करूंगा, मेरा काम मार्ग बताना है। चलना और जाना उनका काम है।"
