किसी गाँव में एक सज्जन पुरुष रहते थे। उनके घर के सामने एक सुनार का घर था। सुनार के पास सोना आता रहता था और वह गढ़ कर देता और ऐसा करके पैसे कमाता था। एक दिन उसके पास अधिक सोना जमा हो गया।

रात्रि में पहरा लगाने वाले एक सिपाही को इस बात का पता लग गया। उस पहरेदार ने रात्रि में उस सुनार को मार कर उस बक्शे में सोना को उठाकर चल दिया। इसी बीच सामने रहने वाले सज्जन लघुशंका के लिए उठकर बाहर आये। उन्होंने पहरेदार को पकड़ लिया कि तू इस बक्शे को कैसे ले जा रहा है? तो पहरेदार ने कहा' तू चुप रह, हल्ला मत कर।इस में से कुछ तू लें और कुछ मैं ले लुँ '। सज्जन बोले" मैं कैसे ले लूँ? मैं चोर थोड़े ही हूँ। पहरेदार ने कहा, "देख, तू समझ जा, मेरी बात मान लें, नहीं तो दुःख पायेगा।' पर वे सज्जन माने नहीं, तब पहरेदार बक्शा नीचे रख दिया और उस सज्जन को पकड़कर जोर से सीटी बजा दिया। सीटी की आवाज़ सुनते ही और स्थान पर पहरा दे रहे पहरेदार दौड़ कर वहाँ आ गये। उसने सब से कहा कि 'यह इस घर से बक्सा लेकर आया है और मैंने इसको पकड़ लिया हैं। तब सिपाहियों ने घर में जाकर देखा कि  सुनार मरा पड़ा हैं। उन्होंने ने उस सज्जन को पकड़ लिया और राजकीय आदमियों के हवाले कर दिया।

जज के सामने बहस हुई तो उस सज्जन ने कहा कि "मैने नहीं मारा है, उस पहरेदार सिपाही ने मारा है'। सब सिपाही आपस में मिले हुए थे, उन्होंने कहा कि 'नहीं, इसी ने मारा है, हमने खुद रात्रि में इसे पकड़ा, इत्यादि। मुकदमा चला। चलते-चलते अन्त में उस सज्जन के लिए फाँसी का  हुक़्म हुआ। फाँसी का हुक़्म होते ही उस सज्जन पुरुष के मुख से निकला- 'देखों, सरासर अन्याय हो रहा हैं! भगवान के दरबार में कोई न्याय नहीं! मैंने मारा नहीं, मुझे दण्ड हो और जिसने मारा हैं, वह बेदाग़ छूट जाए, जुर्माना भी नहीं; यह अन्याय हैं।' जज पर उसके वचनों का असर पड़ा कि वास्तव में यह सच बोल रहा हैं, इसकी किसी तरह जाँच होनी चाहिए। ऐसा विचार करके उस जज ने एक षड्यंत्र रचा।

सुबह होते ही एक आदमी रोता-चिल्लाता हुआ आया और बोला- हमारे भाई की हत्या हो गई, सरकार! इसकी जाँच होनी चाहिये। तब जज ने उसी सिपाही और क़ैदी सज्जन को मरे हुए व्यक्ति की लाश उठाकर लाने के लिए भेजा। दोनों उस आदमी के साथ वहां गए, जहां लाश पड़ी थी। खाट पर लाश के ऊपर कपड़ा बिछा था। खून बिखरा पड़ा था। दोनों ने उस खाट को उठाया और उठाकर ले चले। साथ दूसरा आदमी खबर देने के बहाने दौड़ कर आगे चला गया। तब चलते-चलते सिपाही ने कैदी से कहा- देख उस दिन तू मेरी बात मान लेता तो सोना मिल जाता और फाँसी भी नहीं होती, अब देख लिया सच का फल? कैदी ने कहा- मैने तो अपना काम सच्चाई का ही किया था, फाँसी हो गयी। हत्या की तूने और दण्ड भोगना पड़ा मेरे को। भगवान के यहाँ न्याय नहीं।

खाट पर झूठमूठ मरे हुए आदमी उन दोनों की बातें सुन रहा था।उसने खाट पर पड़े-पड़े उन दोनों की बातें लिख ली कि सिपाही ने यह कहा और क़ैदी ने यह कहा। जब जज के सामने खाट रखी गयी तो खून भरे कपड़े को हटाकर वह उठ खड़ा हुआ और उसने सारी बात जज को बता दिया कि रास्ते में सिपाही यह बोला और कैदी यह बोला।

यह सुनकर जज को बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। सिपाही भी हक्का-बक्का रह गया। सिपाही को पकड़ कर कैद कर लिया गया। परन्तु जज के मन में संतोष नहीं हुआ। उसने कैदी को एकांत में बुलाकर कहा कि इस मामले में तो मैं तुम को निर्दोष मानता हूँ, पर सच-सच बताओ कि इस जन्म में तुमने कोई हत्या की हैं क्या? वह बोला- बहुत पहले की घटना हैं।

एक दुष्ट भाई के की हत्या कर दिया था क्योंकि वह सारी जमीन हड़पने के लिए मुझे मारना चाहता था। इस घटना की जानकारी किसी को नहीं हो सकी क्योंकि यह एक दुघर्टना समझा गया। यह सुनकर जज साहब बोले- तुम्हारे को इस समय फाँसी होगी ही; मैंने कभी किसी से घूस नहीं खायी, कभी बेईमानी नहीं की, फिर मेरे हाथों से इसके लिए फाँसी का हुक्म लिखा कैसे गया? अब संतोष हुआ।उसी पाप का फल तुम्हें यह भोगना पड़ेगा। सिपाही को अलग फाँसी होगी।

(उस सज्जन ने चोर को सिपाही से पकड़वाकर अपने कर्तव्य का पालन किया था। फिर उसके जो दण्ड मिला हैं, वह उसके कर्तव्य-पालन का फल नहीं हैं, प्रत्युत उसने बहुत पहले जो हत्या की थी, उस हत्या का फल हैं। कर्तव्य का पालन करने के के कारण उस पाप (हत्या) का फल उसको यहीं मिल गया)।

इस कहानी से यह पता चलता हैं कि मनुष्य के कब किये हुए कर्म का फल कब मिलेगा- इसका कुछ पता नहीं। ईश्वर का विधान भी विचित्र हैं। व्यक्ति को सदैव अच्छे कर्म ही करना चाहिए।
A gentleman lived in a village.  There was a goldsmith's house opposite his house.  Goldsmith used to come to gold and he used to make a stronghold and earn money by doing so.  One day more gold was deposited with him.

A soldier guarding the night came to know about this.  The guard killed the goldsmith at night and picked up the gold in the box and left.  Meanwhile, the gentleman who lived in front came out for a brief visit.  They caught the watchman, how are you carrying this box?  So the watchman said, 'You keep quiet, don't make a noise. Take some of this and I will take some'. The gentleman said, "How do I take it? I am not a thief." The watchman said, "Look, you understand, obey me, otherwise you will suffer."  But they did not listen to the gentleman, then the guard put the box down and caught the gentleman and whistled loudly. On hearing the whistle sound and the guards guarding the place came running.  He told everyone that 'It has brought a box from this house and I have caught it.  Then the soldiers went into the house and saw that the goldsmith was dead.  He caught the gentleman and handed over the royal men.

When the judge argued in front of the judge, the gentleman said, "I have not killed, that guard has killed. All the soldiers were meeting with each other, they said' No, this is the one who killed, we caught it in the night itself. Etc. The trial took place. Finally, the execution of the execution was done for that gentleman. At the end of the execution, the gentleman came out of the mouth of the man - "See, sheer injustice is being done! There is no justice in God's court!"  I  Don't kill me, let me be punished and the one who is killed, will be left untouched, not even fined; this is injustice. '  The judge was impressed by his words that in fact he is telling the truth, it should be investigated in some way. By considering this, that judge hatched a conspiracy.

Just in the morning, a man came crying and screaming and said - Our brother is killed, Sarkar!  It should be investigated.  Then the judge sent the same soldier and prisoner to pick up the dead man's corpse.  Both of them went there with the man, where the corpse lay.  A cloth was spread on the cot over the corpse. Blood was spilled  Both of them picked up the cot and carried it away.  The other man ran forward on the pretext of giving the news.  Then, while walking, the soldier said to the prisoner, see, if you had agreed to me that day, you would have got gold and there is no execution, now you have seen the fruit of the truth?  The prisoner said- I had done my work only for the truth, got hanged.  You had to suffer the punishment and murder.  No justice for God.

The dead man lying on the cot was listening to both of them. He wrote the words of both of them lying on the cot that the soldier said this and the prisoner said this.  When the bed was laid in front of the judge, he stood up after removing the blood-soaked cloth and he told the whole thing to the judge that the soldier on the way said this and the prisoner said this.

The judge was very surprised to hear this.  The soldier too was taken aback.  The soldier was captured and imprisoned.  But the judge did not feel satisfied.  He called the prisoner in solitude and said that I consider you innocent in this case, but tell me the truth, whether you have committed any murder in this birth?  He said - It is a very early event.

An evil brother K was killed because he wanted to kill me to grab all the land.  No one could be aware of this incident because it was deemed an accident.  Hearing this, the judge said - you will be hanged at this time;  I never bribed anyone, never cheated, then how was the execution order written out of my hands?  Now you are satisfied. You will have to bear the fruit of that sin.  The soldier will be hanged separately.

(That gentleman did his duty by holding the thief with a soldier. Then the punishments he received are not the result of his duty, but the fruits of the murder he had committed long ago.  Due to obeying, he got the result of that sin (murder) here).

It is known from this story that when will the fruit of human karma be received - it is not known.  God's laws are also bizarre.  One should always do good deeds.

अवश्यमेव भोक्तव्यं कृतं  कर्म शुभाशुभम्।

नाभुक्तं क्षीयते कर्म जन्मकोटिशतैरपि।।
