मुझे तुम कब्र में कैद नहीं रख पाओगे। You will not be able to keep me imprisoned in the grave.

उस दिन, पादरी डुप्रे दक्षिण अफ्रीका की केपटाउन स्थित जेल के उस कोठरी में दाखिल हुए- जहाँ वह कैद था। पादरी के हाथों में बाइबिल थी। पादरी को आते हुए देखकर वह अपने स्थान से उठकर खड़ा हो गया। कोठरी के गेट पर दो सिपाही तैनात थे।
Thatday, Pastor Dupre entered the cell of the prison in Cape Town, South Africa- where he was imprisoned. The pastor had a Bible in his hands. Seeing the pastor coming, he got up from his place and stood up. Two soldiers were stationed at the gate of the cell.

कैदी युवक अपने स्थान से आगे बढ़कर पादरी के हाथ से बाइबिल ले ली और कहने लगा, यह ग्रंथ मेरा जीवन है। मैं सदैव इसी के साथ जिया हूँ और मैं इसे हाथ में लेकर ईश्वर की सौगंध खाता हूँ कि मैंने पियरे विलियर्स की हत्या नहीं की। मैं एक निर्दोष व्यक्ति हूँ, परन्तु फिर भी मैं ऐसे अपराध के लिए फाँसी के फंदे पर चढ़ने के लिए विवश हूँ, जो मैंने नहीं किया है।
The prisoner youth moved from his place and took the Bible from the hand of the pastor and started saying, this book is my life. I have always lived with it and I take it in my hands and pray to God that I did not kill Pierre Villiers. I am an innocent person, but still I am forced to hang myself for a crime that I have not committed.

पादरी ने युवक के कंधे को थपथपाई और वे भर्राए गले से बोले, मुझे तुम पर विश्वास है, मेरे बच्चे! लेकिन मैं कुछ भी नहीं कर सकता। कानूनी फैसले के अनुसार आज तुम्हें फाँसी पर लटकाए जाने का निर्णय किया जा चुका है।
The pastor patted the young man's shoulder and he said with a full neck, I believe in you, my child!  But I can do nothing. According to the legal decision, today it has been decided to hang you.

कुछ ही देर बाद, एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी जेल की उस कोठरी में दाखिल हुआ और नियमानुसार औपचारिक दस्तावेज पढ़कर सुनाने लगा। इसमें दंडित व्यक्ति को यह यह याद कराया गया था कि उसे (जॉन गेमार्ड) को फाँसी पर लटकाये जाने की सजा सुनाई गई है, क्योंकि उसने पियरे विलियर्स नामक एक खेतिहर मजदूर को उसका गला घोंट कर मार डाला था। क्या इस संदर्भ में तुम्हें कुछ कहना है? इस पर कैदी ने उत्तर दिया, हाँ मैं सर्वथा निर्दोष हूँ। परंतु उसका यह कथन सदैव अर्थहीन ही बना रहा।
Shortly afterwards, a senior officer entered the prison cell and read out the formal documents as per rules. In this, the punished person was reminded that he (John Gaimard) was sentenced to be hanged, because he strangled a agricultural laborer named Pierre Villiers to death.  Do you have anything to say in this context? The prisoner replied, yes I am completely innocent. But his statement always remained meaningless.

और नवंबर 1856 की वह सुबह भी आ गई। जब जॉन गेमार्ड नपे तुले कदमों से चलता हुआ फाँसी के फंदे के पास तक आया। उसके चेहरे पर भय की कोई भी शिकन तक न थी। पादरी डुप्रे ने जैसे ही धर्मोपदेश सुनाने प्रारम्भ किए, जॉन गेमार्ड ने उनकी ओर मुड़ कर कहा, फादर! इस काम में अपना समय नष्ट न करें.….ये लोग मेरे शरीर को नष्ट कर सकते है।लेकिन मेरी आत्मा को कोई नहीं मार सकता।
And that morning of November 1856 also came. When John Gaymard walked down the steps, he came to the gallows. There was no wrinkle of fear on his face. As Pastor Duprey began preaching the sermon, John Gaymard turned to him and said, Father! Do not waste your time in this work… .these people can destroy my body but no one can kill my soul.

इस दौरान फाँसी की कार्यवाही करने वालों ने उसे फांसी का फंदा पहना दिया और फिर उसे कस डाला। इस कार्यवाही के थोड़ी देर में ही उसके प्राण पखेरू उड़ गए। लेकिन मृत्यु से पूर्व काले कपड़े में बंद अपना सिर घुमाकर उसने कहा, सुनो मुझे किसी भी कब्र में कैद नहीं रखा जाता सकता। समझे? किसी भी कब्र में नहीं क्योंकि मैं बेकसूर मारा जा रहा हूँ। फिर जैसे ही झटके के साथ रस्सा छोड़ा गया गेमार्ड का शरीर अधर में झूल गया।

During this, the executioners hanged him and then tightened him. Shortly after this action, his life was blown away. But before turning his head in black clothes before death, he said, listen, I cannot be imprisoned in any grave. Understand? Not in any grave because I am being killed innocently. Then as soon as the tow was left with the shock, Gaymard's body swung in the balance.

लगभग 2 घंटे बाद, उसके सारे डॉक्टरी परीक्षण किए गए और नियमानुसार यह सुनिश्चित किया गया कि कानून द्वारा दी गई सजा के मुताबिक उसकी मृत्यु हो चुकी है। फिर उसके शव को एक सादी सी काले रंग की शव पेटी में रखा गया। हत्या का यह मामला, जिसमें जॉन गेमार्ड को मृत्युदंड मिला था, आम लोगों में चर्चा का विषय बन गया था।
After about 2 hours, all his medical tests were done and as per the rules it was ensured that he had died as per the punishment given by the law.  Then his body was kept in a simple black color box.  This murder case, in which John Gaimard received the death penalty, became a topic of discussion among the general public.

अतः अधिकारी भी इस ओर विशेष ध्यान देने के लिए मजबूर हो गए थे। उन्होंने फाँसीघर में जाकर बार-बार यह सुनिश्चित किया कि गेमार्ड की शव पेटी को पर्याप्त रूप से कीले ठोंक कर बंद किया गया है या कि नहीं। उन्होंने इसका भी निरीक्षण किया कि शवपेटी को गाड़ी में रखें जाने के पूर्व अच्छी तरह सीलबंद कर दिया गया था। जब वे पूरी तरह आश्वत हो गए तो शव को दफनाने के लिए कैदखाने के पीछे की ओर स्थित पार्ल पर्वत के ढलान पर ले जाया गया।
Therefore, the officers were also forced to pay special attention to this. He repeatedly went to the gallows to ascertain whether Gaimard's corpse was adequately sealed with a nail. He also inspected that the shawpetti was sealed well before being placed in the car. When they were fully convinced, the body was taken to the slopes of the Parle Mountains at the back of the prison for burial.

सुरक्षाकर्मियों ने शव को आठ फुट गहरी कब्र में रख दिया फिर उसपर पत्थर चुनकर मजार बना दी गई। वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों के आदेश के अनुसार कब्र के पास दो सुरक्षाकर्मी रात-दिन पहरे पर नियमित रूप से रहने लगे, ताकि कोई भी व्यक्ति शव को निकालने का प्रयास न करें। यह पहरा लगातार दो महीने तक बिठाए रखा गया था।
The security personnel placed the dead body in an eight-foot-deep tomb, then a stone was chosen on it. As per the order of the senior officials, two security personnel near the tomb began to stay regularly at night guard, so that no person would attempt to remove the dead body.  This watch was kept for two consecutive months.

इसी दौरान कुछ अन्य घटनाएं घटती हो रही थी, जो इस असाधारण मामले को एक नया मोड़ दे रही थी। हुआ यह कि जिस खेत में हत्या की गई थी, उसके मालिक ने मृतक पियरे विलियर्स का बटुवा पीटर लॉरेंस नामक एक व्यक्ति के पास बरामद कर लिया था। यह व्यक्ति पशुओं की देखभाल का काम करता था। लॉरेंस ने भागने की कोशिश की तो उसे पकड़ कर पुलिस के हवाले कर दिया गया। जब उसके कमरे की तलाशी ली गई, तो उसके पास से मृतक की अंगूठी और घड़ी भी बरामद हुई। आखिरकार काँपते शब्दों में लॉरेंस ने स्वीकार किया कि पियरे विलियर्स की हत्या उसी ने की थी। उसने पियरे विलियर्स के गले में रस्से का फंदा डालकर उसे घोट डाला था।
At the same time some other incidents were happening, giving a new twist to this extraordinary case. It happened that the owner of the farm in which the murder took place had recovered the wallet of the deceased Pierre Villiers to a man named Peter Lawrence. This person used to take care of animals. When Lawrence tried to escape, he was caught and handed over to the police. When his room was searched, the ring and watch of the deceased were also recovered from him. Ultimately, in confessing words, Lawrence admitted that he had killed Pierre Villiers. He had pierced Pierre Villiers by throwing a rope around his neck.

इस घटना से यह स्पष्ट हो गया था कि न्यायालय ने एक बड़ी दुखद भूल की थी। जिसके कारण निर्दोष जॉन गेमार्ड को फाँसी के फंदे पर लटकाना पड़ा था। इस पर गवर्नर ने आदेश दिया कि गेमार्ड का नाम तुरंत अपराधियों की सूची से हटा दिया जाए और उस निर्दोष व्यक्ति की विधवा माँ को तत्काल एक हजार पाउंड बतौर मुआवजा अदा किया जाए, साथ ही यह भी कि जब तक वह जीवित रहे, उसे 108 पाउंड प्रतिवर्ष पेंशन के रूप में दिया जाए।
It was clear from this incident that the court had made a big sad mistake. Because of which the innocent John Gaymard had to be hanged. The governor ordered that Gaymard's name be immediately removed from the list of criminals and that the innocent mother's widowed mother be immediately paid a thousand pounds as compensation, as well as 108 pounds as long as she lived. To be given as pension every year.

गवर्नर ने ये आदेश भी जारी किया कि सरकारी खर्च पर जॉन गेमार्ड का शव कब्र से निकाल कर किसी पवित्र स्थल पर दफनाने की व्यवस्था की जाए। परिणामस्वरूप पार्ल पर्वत के उस ढलान के स्थल पर सरकारी अधिकारियों और कर्मचारियों का दल पहुँचा, जहाँ केवल दो महीने पूर्व जॉन गेमार्ड का शव दफन किया गया था। उस समय दल के साथ जॉन गेमार्ड की पत्नी भी थी। सिपाहियों ने कब्र को खोदकर पत्थर हटाए। गेमार्ड की पत्नी चुपचाप पास ही खड़ी यह सारा दृश्य देख रही थी। आखिर उस शव पेटी को कब्र से बाहर निकाला गया। जेल के अधिकारियों ने शवपेटी का निरीक्षण किया और उसे सीलबंद पाया, फिर सुरक्षाकर्मियों ने शवपेटी को खोला तो सभी आँखे फाड़े आश्चर्य से देखते रह गए। वह खाली थी।
The governor also issued an order that at the government's expense, the arrangement of John Gaymard's body be removed from the tomb and buried at a holy site. As a result, a team of government officials and staff arrived at the site of the slope of Parle Mountains, where the body of John Gaymard was buried only two months earlier. John Gaymard was also with the crew at the time.  The soldiers dug the tomb and removed the stones. Gaymard's wife was silently watching the entire scene.  Finally, the dead body was taken out of the grave. Prison officials inspected the burial ground and found it sealed, then all the eyes were torn with surprise when the security personnel opened the corpse. She was empty.

आखिर शव कहा गायब हो गया? इसकी छानबीन शुरू की गई। जाँच-पड़ताल से पता चला कि दो महीने पूर्व जब शव को दफनाया गया था, तब से लेकर आज तक लगातार सुरक्षाकर्मी यहां पहरा देते रहे। एक क्षण के लिए भी पहरा नहीं हटाया गया। तब शवपेटी खाली क्यों है? क्या शव स्वयं उठकर चुपचाप निकल गया? अथवा किसी ने जादू से उस शव को गायब कर दिया? इन्हीं प्रश्नों में उलझे सरकारी कर्मचारी छानबीन करते रहे। लेकिन शव का पता न चला। आखिर जॉन गेमार्ड का शव कब्र से लापता घोषित कर दिया गया।
Where did the dead body disappear? Its investigation was started. Investigations revealed that the security guard kept guarding the body continuously since then when the body was buried two months ago.  The guard was not removed even for a moment.  Why is the dead body empty then? Did the body get up and leave silently? Or did someone make that corpse disappear by magic? Government employees involved in these questions kept investigating. But the dead body was not found. After all, John Gaymard's body was declared missing from the tomb.

लगभग सौ वर्ष बाद 1956 में कुछ पर्यटक उसी पार्ल पर्वत के ढालुआँ स्थल पर गए थे, तो उन्हें काफी ऊँचाई पर काले पत्थर की एक शिला नजर आई, जो उल्टी पड़ी हुई थी और उस पर कुछ खुदा हुआ था। उसे पढ़ा गया, लिखा था- जॉन गेमार्ड की स्मृति में, जो परमात्मा में लीन है, उस पर परमात्मा की असीम अनुकंपा है।
Some hundred years later, in 1956, when some tourists went to the sloping site of the same Paarl mountain, they saw a black stone rock at a very high height, which was vomiting and something was inscribed on it. He was read, wrote - In the memory of John Gaymard, who is absorbed in God, there is infinite compassion for God.

यह शिला आज भी केपटाउन के संग्रहालय में सुरक्षित है और स्मरण करा रही है कि उसे जॉन गेमार्ड किसी कब्र में कैद करके नहीं रखा जा सकता। ईश्वर के प्रति सच्चा विश्वास हो तो वह सभी बंधनों से मुक्त हो सकता है। कब्र क्या है।
This rock is still preserved in the Museum of Cape Town and is reminded that it cannot be held in a grave by John Gaymard. If you have true faith in God, then he can be free from all bondage.  What is the grave
